Lailson
de Holanda Cavalcanti was born on December 26, 1952, in Recife,
Pernambuco, Brazil. When he was 17
years old he started publishing his cartoons at The Pine Cone (Arkansas,
USA), receiving the Award for
Best Original Artwork, by the Arkansas High School Press Association. Back to Brazil he
formed the band Phetus -
one of the seminal rock groups of Pernambuco in the 70's, along with
Paulo Rafael and Zé da Flauta - and recorded the independent record SATWA
(with Lula Côrtes-73), worked as an audio-visual artist for an English
school where he also taught and later became staff artists and art
Director of advertisement agencies in Recife, staying in this field
until 1984. In 1975, he
started publishing on the Pernambuco newspapers with a two pages comics
work at the Jornal da
Cidade, working as a regular illustrator on that weekly newspaper. In the following
year, with the group that started the humor movement in Pernambuco in
the 70's (Paulo Santos, Ral and Bione), he was one of the founders of
the humor page (later on a weekly independent publication) O PAPA-FIGO
at the Jornal da Semana. Winner of the
First Prize at the Concurso
de Desenho de Humor na Paraíba in 1976, received the First Prize at
the Salão Internacional de Humor
de Piracicaba (São Paulo) in 77, becoming in this same year the
Editorial cartoonist at the Diario
de Pernambuco with a daily panel at the opinions page, holding the
record of being the editorial cartoonist who publishes steadily on the
same newspaper for the longest period in Brazil. He published his
works in many newspapers and magazines in Brazil and abroad, among them
Pasquim, MAD (Brazilian edition), Revista Visão, Veja 28 Graus, KYX 93,
Rei Da Notícia, Florida Review, O Europeu, Revista Bundas, Revista
Palavra and O Pasquim 21 and for a while he created and was the editor
of a bi-weekly humor journal, the Folhetim Humorial. With participation
in many national and international humor festivals, he had works
selected for exhibition in Japan, Germany, Bulgaria, Turkey and Spain. Winner of the
First Prize in Editorial Cartoon in Montreal/Canada
(85), Paraíba (76), Piracicaba (77 - where he also won the Press
Prize in 85)- Minas (85), and Portugal (94), he also won the Second
Prize in Montreal (83) and
Salvador (87). He participated in
the collective exhibits AMAZONIA
3000 (São Paulo - 96), SEM AIDS, COM AMOR (São Paulo - 97),
MUESTRA IBERO AMERICANA DE ALCALÁ DE HENARES (Spain - 1998 to 2003),
500 ANOS DE HUMOR (Brazil/Portugal - 2000) and HUMOR DO FIM DO SÉCULO
(Recife -2000). He is also author
of the books O QUE VIER EU TRAÇO
(81), DEMOCRACIA PRA MIM É
GREGO (84), ESTA VIDA É UM
CIRCO (89), CARTAS DE
PINDORAMA (89), HUMOR DIÁRIO
(97), PINDORAMA A OUTRA HISTÓRIA DO BRASIL (2001), and RETRATO
OFICIAL (2002), published his daily comic strip PINDORAMA
in many Brazilian newspapers (publishing a collection which was shown to
the public at the IX Festival da Amadora,Portugal, PINDORAMA
EDIÇÃO ESPECIAL), published the independent magazine ZONA
TROPICAL at the Bienal Internacional de Quadrinhos do Rio de Janeiro
(91) and was also the creator of the national humor salons of Pernambuco
in 83 and 84, the Festival de Humor do Recife (86), Salão de Humor na
Imprensa (91), outdoors billboards exhibit O Riso Na Rua (95), Seminário
O Humor na Imprensa do Ano 2000 (98) and since 1999 created and is the
Curator of the Festival Internacional de Humor e Quadrinhos de
Pernambuco. In 2001 he
presented the individual exhibit PINDORAMA A OUTRA HISTÓRIA DO BRASIL
at the Observatório Cultural Malakoff (later presented in Spain,
2002) and the 25th anniversary of Editorial Cartoons publishing RETRATO
OFICIAL, at the Palácio do Campo das Princesas, later presented at the
Shopping Center Recife (2002). Founding member of
the Brazilian Cartoonists Association - ACB, he is one of the founders
and the first president of the ACAPE - Associação dos Cartunistas de
Pernambuco (Pernambuco Cartoonists Association), a non - governmental
organization aimed at the development of Graphic Humor and Sequential
Art as an art form and a medium of education and expression. His works may be seen daily at the websites www.pernambuco.com, www.chargeonline.com.br) and his works are distributed outside Brazil by the New York Times Syndicate/CartoonArts International. Besides being a
cartoonist, he also plays with his Rock & Blues group
THE
LAILSON BLUES BAND. In
2001 he created the company LHC Associados, working with specialized
communication for companies, cultural projects and sales, licensing and
reproduction of his originals.
