Someone at the US Department of
State must have a pretty good sense of humor: on April, 2004, I received
an invitation to enroll along with a group of Brazilian journalists on
the International Visitors Program and take a closer look at the US
media preparations for the presidential elections in November.
The trip was scheduled to the
ides of August and a busy agenda was prepared for us by Delphi World
Learning office in Washington. We'd visit newspapers, radio and TV
stations, public offices and meet with politicians and scholars, giving
us a deeper understanding of the American electoral process.
A few days before the National
Republican Party Convention began in New York, with the Charley
hurricane blowing up in Florida, we embarked to know the United States
post September eleven.
Even before we boarded we were
warned not to lock our suitcases. If they were locked they would be
considered suspicious and could have their lockers forced and broken by
the authorities!
