Our next appointment was a visit to the US Supreme Court, where, on the year 2000, the presidential elections were decided. Mr. Matthew Duchesne explained to us the complex election system of the country which, to sum it up, may be defined as being " fifty different presidential elections"! It's mandatory that each voter declare his/her party when registering and each state has different mechanisms for registration: in some of them you have to apply eight months ahead of the elections and in others you may register almost on elections day. To be on every state ballot, a candidate has to fulfill different legal requirements and, of course, only the two major parties achieve that Herculean task! Curiosities: each county on each state decides how the election process will happen there and on the same day are held elections for the Presidential office, for the school board office, Sheriff, city manager, or the chairman of the water or light and power council board!
